A woman was stocking a communal book box in an Ann Arbor last week when she discovered a butcher knife, police say.
The knife, described as being 18 inches long and 2 and 1/4 inches wide, was found in a communal book exchange box at the northeast corner of Hiscock and Miner in Ann Arbor’s Water Hill neighborhood about 12:40 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, said Ann Arbor Police Sgt. Justin Kandt.
It was turned over to Ann Arbor police and a “found-property” report was taken. Kandt said no ongoing criminal investigation is underway and the intent of the potential weapon being left there is unknown.
The woman who came across the knife posted about the unusual discovery on the Ann Arbor Next Door website, an online source for local information.
“As I moved books around to make room for the ones I brought, I found a long butcher knife hidden in the back,” she wrote. “Although I cook and bake, this creeped me out. I brought it home, called the police and they have it.”
The woman said she measured the blade.
“As you enjoy autumn and get ready for Halloween,” she wrote, “be aware of your surroundings."
The book box is not operated by Ann Arbor or its library system.
Sometimes referred to as “little libraries,” communal book boxes are usually placed on neighborhood or city streets, stocked by members of the public and open for free to anyone wishing to take a book.
