LAFAYETTE

The Friends Corner Book Shop at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center campus was set to reopen Sept. 8 for curbside service.

The shop’s hours will be Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The shop will be open for curbside service only and is still unable to accept new donations. If there is a specific book you would like to purchase, please request it via email to friendscornerbookshop@gmail.com. A volunteer will let you know whether or not it is available.

There will also be an opportunity to “window-shop,” as we will place books and other items in the windows. Please provide exact change or a check for purchase; checks may be made out to FLLLC (Friends of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center). In addition to the books offered for sale in our shop, the shop has more than 1,800 books for sale on Amazon. Masks and social distancing will be required when picking up items.

PLEASANT HILL

Attend county Social Justice Alliance’s monthly meetings

Social justice indicates equal access to health care, wealth, justice and opportunity; the Social Justice Alliance of Contra Costa County believes in and promotes the concept of social justice in its role as a committee of the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County, based in Pleasant Hill.

For several years, the Social Justice Alliance of Contra Costa County has partnered with a national coalition known as “Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence” and in April 2019 became an endorser of “The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for a Moral Revival,” which demands economic and human rights for less fortunate people in the United States.

The Social Justice Alliance works closely with the Migrant and Immigrant Community Action (MICA) Project to help young, undocumented immigrants gain legal status and promotes universal health care. In cooperation with the Interfaith Council and Winter Nights Family Shelter, the alliance provides emergency housing for needy families with children and seniors. The alliance envisions a world in which societies treat all their citizens equally and enables them to reach their full potential. It celebrates diversity, equity and inclusion, believes in human dignity and contends all voices should be engaged.

The group is holding Zoom meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. For details visit bayareane.ws/2FdY19q or interfaithccc.org online.

East County Shared Ministry member celebrates 100 years

Sept. 7 marks a milestone for local resident Lucille Brautigam. She will be celebrating her birthday, but not just any birthday. Lucille hits triple digits this year and joins that rare club of centennial celebrants.

Lucille Olivia Ortega was born on Sept. 7, 1920, in Bluefields, Nicaragua. She attended Moravian High School and later continued her studies at the Colegio Normal de SeƱoritas in Managua. In 1940 Lucille met and married the love of her life, Harry Emil Brautigam. They had four children: Dr. Harry Emil Brautigam Jr. (1949 to 2008), Jeannette Vega, Sandra Sanchez and Rose Solorzano.

For many years Harry and Lucille enjoyed a peaceful and prosperous life in Nicaragua. However, in 1978, faced with the Nicaraguan Revolution, they moved to the United States and joined their daughter, Rose, and her husband, Alvaro Solorzano, who were already living here.

Lucille is a multitalented and gifted woman who has enjoyed a lifelong passion for arts and crafts, including knitting, crafting and painting. She has regularly delighted her friends and family with a variety of beautiful creations. Sewing, knitting and crocheting dresses and blankets for her great-grandchildren, making beautiful paintings and unique Christmas decorations like wreaths, flower arrangements and angels and her signature personalized greeting cards are just some of her many talents.

Blessed with 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, Lucille is the beloved matriarch of her family. She loves to attend Sunday services and was actively doing so prior to the pandemic. She is now a regular Zoom attendee and enjoys seeing her friends online.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, Lucille will be honored at her church’s worship service at 10 a.m. Sept. 6. With COVID-19 limiting, even eliminating, group gatherings, the congregation has been meeting on line since March 15 via Zoom, which will be the case for Lucille’s celebration as well. In further honor of her milestone birthday, Lucille’s daughter, Rose, is planning a drive-by parade at 2234 Concord Drive in Pittsburg, complete with Lucille’s favorite mariachi band providing musical entertainment from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sept. 6, the evening before her birthday.

The Rev. Will McGarvey, a pastor at Community Presbyterian Church, which shares a ministry with First Congregational Church, commented, “As a congregation that’s over 150 years old, we celebrate all our members, especially those who mark a centennial in their own lifetime and for all they are to our community. Happy birthday, Lucille.”

Lucille has already begun receiving greetings and recognition from various friends and organizations with which she has been involved. We join them in wishing her a very happy birthday and wishes for many more.

BRENTWOOD

‘Back to Business’ COVID-19 safety kits to be provided

The city of Brentwood and the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce are partnering to provide Brentwood businesses with “Back to Business” COVID-19 safety kits to help the city’s businesses reopen their doors safely for customers and staffs. Each kit will include masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, a thermometer, posters and floor graphics. This is a priority of the City Council to help our businesses wherever possible during this challenging time.

Funding for these kits in the amount of $212,000 has been approved by the City Council with reimbursement provided through the federal CARES Act, which Congress approved last spring to provide funding to local governments to assist with responding to the COVID-19 outbreak. The state of California shared its funds with all cities in California (most were too small to receive direct federal funding). The funds can only be used to cover costs incurred because of the pandemic.

Providing these kits to businesses helps eliminate that expense for business owners already impacted by coronavirus closures. The kits may also help them open in some fashion sooner, rather than later. The kits were expected to be available by Sept. 9.
