I’ve always loved to read. After my family, pets, exercise, Golden Girls, and iced tea, reading relaxes me and makes me smile. I consider books to be an integral part of my life, maybe that’s why I’m a teacher. For several years, early elementary school books have kept me busy, ranging from Dr. Seuss books to Pete the Cat. But sometimes, I want to read a book with a shocking plot twist, stay up a bit too late, because I want to know what happens! If you are a sucker for a good plot twist, you need to read "Where the Crawdads Sing" by Delia Owens.

One of my favorite teachers, Mrs. Teri Struck, is always posting on Facebook about books that intrigue her and keep her up all night. When she commented that she couldn’t put Where the Crawdads Sing down, I knew I had to get to the library, stat! I ordered the book and I picked it up the next day. Needless to say, I was captivated and hypnotized from page one.

Where the Crawdads Sing is about a young woman named Kya, who’s left to raise herself in the marshes of North Carolina. The story follows two timelines that slowly connect with each other. The first timeline describes the life of a young girl named Kya, who at 6 years old, watches her mother abandon her and her family because of her father’s abuse. This time period takes place from 1952 to 1969. Kya waits for her mother’s return, and slowly her older siblings, and her closest sibling, Jodie, all leave because of their Pa’s drinking and violent abuse. Pa was a gambler and a drunk, he’d leave Kya for days, sometimes weeks, so Kya had to figure out how to take care of herself in the old, decrepit shack where she lived. Even though Kya was young, she was extremely self-reliant. She dug for mussels and smoked fish, and would get gas from Jumpin’, a man who owned a gasoline station for boats. Jumpin’ and his wife, Mabel, helped Kya by collecting donated clothes and being good friends to her.

Kya grew up facing prejudice from the townspeople who called her “Marsh Girl.” School officials found her in the shack one day and took her to school. She was laughed at by the schoolchildren and called mean names by the local pastor’s wife. That was the first and last day she ever went to school.

One day, Kya got lost and a local boy named Tate helped lead her home. Tate happened to be an old friend of her older brother, Jodie, and they became good friends, enjoying the marsh by finding feathers of rare birds. Eventually, Tate taught Kya how to read and write.

The second timeline follows the murder investigation of Chase Andrews, a local rich and prominent citizen of Barkley Cove, North Carolina. Chase is the local quarterback and ladies man, and becomes interested in Kya. They become friends, but something catastrophic happens to Chase, and Kya is blamed for it. I can’t give it away, but let me tell you, there is a major plot twist! You need to read this exciting book yourself, you won’t be sorry!

After I finished reading the book, I thought, wouldn’t a book-to-screen transformation be fantastic? I did a search and I was excited to see that Reese Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, is behind the project. I can’t wait to see it!
