The Arkansas Chapter XXXIV Colonial Dames of America recently held its semiannual meeting in Little Rock.
The chapter announced local libraries have received donated copies of the No. 1 New York Times bestseller "The Pioneers: The Heroic Story of the Settlers Who Brought the American Ideal West." by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough. The book was selected by the National Society CDA as the best book for 2019 chronicling American history. The annual selection has been made by CDA since 1951, a news release said.
Arkansas CDA was founded by Villager Mary-Reid Warner eight years ago and now has over 40 members. National CDA was founded in 1890 in New York City. CDA is comprised of women descended from an ancestor who gave specified service within the period beginning with the settlement of Jamestown, Va., May 13, 1607, and extending to, but not including, the Battle of Lexington on April 19, 1775, in one or more of the 13 original Colonies, it said.
In addition to national projects, Arkansas CDA continues its support of coffee supplies and books to the community-based veterans outpatient clinic in Hot Springs. One of its projects is also Thomas Cemetery in North Little Rock. The mayor of North Little Rock, Joe Smith, recently named CDA members Betty Harp, of North Little Rock, Lisa Winkleman, of Fayetteville and Teresa Clark, of North Little Rock, to an advisory committee for the 150-year-old cemetery.
"CDA, established in 1890, is the oldest colonial lineage society for women in the United States. Celebrating its 130th in 2020, the Society was established to commemorate the history of the thirteen American colonies and the men and women who founded them. Its mission is to promote the historic preservation of sites and objects, award scholarships, educate the public about American history, inspire patriotism, and promote fellowship among our members," the release said.
