Dear Reader:

This past year has given us all many challenges, from the coronavirus pandemic to epic wildfires that scorched more than 4 million acres. The ability not just to endure, but to persevere and overcome is an essential part of the American character — a shared strength that unites us even in the most difficult times.

Now, with the holidays upon us and the promise of a vaccine in coming months, there is hope ahead. In that spirit, The Mercury News is once again highlighting local charities and nonprofits that strive to improve our communities in our annual Wish Book campaign.

They include Valley Churches United, which is raising funds to help wildfire victims; Martha’s Kitchen, which has seen demand double during the pandemic; My New Red Shoes, which provides clothes and shoes to struggling families; and 18 other deserving organizations.

Last year, we raised more than $660,000 to support local efforts to make lives better. We hope you will join us this year in supporting these and other local charities that strive every day to change lives and make wishes come true.

Thank you.
