After the year that was 2020, how about reading a book that celebrates everyday wonders?
You can do so by joining in the Multnomah County Library’s community reading program, Everybody Reads, which this year will feature poet and author Ross Gay’s essay collection “The Book of Delights.”
“ ‘The Book of Delights’ is a needed burst of sunshine at a time heavy with rage, sorrow and pain,” Director of Libraries Vailey Oehlke said in a press release. “Ross Gay encourages us to exercise our delight muscle every day and to ‘attend to the ways we make each other possible.’ ”
The essays address topics ranging from the natural world to Gay’s experience of living in America as a Black man.
Gay is the author of four books of poetry and an editor with the chapbook presses Q Avenue and Ledge Mule Press. His 2015 book of poetry, “Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude,” received the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry, among other awards, and was a finalist for the National Book Award in Poetry. His 2020 ode to basketball legend Julius Erving, “Be Holding: A Poem,” was recently named to the “longlist” of nominees for the 2021 PEN America Literary Awards; it’s one of 10 books up for the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award.
The library will provide copies of “The Book of Delights” at all neighborhood libraries. It will also sponsor online events, to be announced at multcolib.org.
In partnership with the Portland nonprofit Literary Arts, the library will also present Gay giving a virtual lecture and in conversation with Portland author Lidia Yuknavitch starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 6. Tickets are available from Literary Arts.
