Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book was sacked on a play and went into the injury tent during the third quarter of Notre Dame’s College Football Playoff semifinal game and Rose Bowl matchup against No. 1 Alabama. True freshman quarterback Drew Pyne entered the game in Book’s place.

It looked to be a severe injury since it forced him out of the game, but Book returned to the sideline on the following possession. According to ESPN sideline reporter Allison Williams, Book had an upper body injury that trainers were taking a look at, but it was not severe enough to hold him out of the game, as Book quickly got back involved with the team after evaluation.

“Ian Book saw an extended amount of time in the injury tent,” Williams said. “He was sitting on the edge of the table. It appeared that athletic trainers were looking at something with his upper body, but he came running out, jumped on the phone with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and has been throwing around on the sideline ever since. He appears good to go.”

Prior to that update, ESPN attempted to identify what caused the injury to Book.

“It looked like Ian Book landed on the football,” ESPN commentator Todd Blackledge said on the broadcast. “He went into the tent, Brian Kelly not happy with his veteran offensive line giving up the first sack of the game.”

It had so far been a struggling game for Book and the Fighting Irish. Book was 13-of-17 for 105 yards and an interception when he left with the injury and Notre Dame trailed Alabama, 28-7. Book had been outstanding for the Fighting Irish this year coming into the playoff, though. Before this game, Book completed 64% of his passes for 2,601 yards and 15 touchdowns, while throwing just two interceptions.

It looks like the Crimson Tide are on their way to a rather easy victory in the semifinal of the College Football Playoff, which, according to some, brings into question the validity of Notre Dame as a playoff team. It certainly was a bit of a journey for the Fighting Irish to get to this point.

For Notre Dame, getting to the College Football Playoff didn’t come without a little bit of worry. The Fighting Irish were undefeated and No. 2 in the playoff picture all year leading into the ACC title game, but was blown out by Clemson, 34-10 in the rematch of a regular season game. That dropped the Fighting Irish and had some thinking they would miss the playoff, but they were able to sneak in at No. 4.
