Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book earlier announced plans to enter the 2021 NFL Draft. He posted a heartfelt parting message to Notre Dame with a post via Instagram on Wednesday evening.

Book took to social media to explain the decision and to give thanks to Notre Dame. He leaves Notre Dame as the program’s all-time wins leader and posted the following message to his Instagram account:

“Just arrived in Jacksonville to begin my new journey, preparing for the Senior Bowl!

“As I sit here and reflect, a few things come to mind.

“I will always carry Notre Dame with me, today and every day moving forward. None of this would be possible with Coach Kelly, Coach Rees and the entire football and medical staff. I am eternally grateful for the faith and trust you had in me. I also want to express my deep gratitude to Father Jenkins, Mr. Swarbrick, and to each of my professors who were so instrumental to my development.

“My teammates and I will always be connected by the unbreakable bond that comes with wearing that gold helmet, competing, and representing Notre Dame.

“My family has been my rock, without your whole hearted support there’s no way I would be in this position today.

“Finally, to the entire extended Irish family, I will forever be humbled and grateful for all the love and support you gave me. It will never be forgotten. So, it’s not goodbye, it’s just until next time!”

Book guided Notre Dame to a spot in the College Football Playoff this season. The Fighting Irish's year ended in the semifinals with a 31-14 loss to Alabama. Book finished his senior season by throwing for 2,830 yards with 15 touchdowns and three interceptions. He finished his Notre Dame career with a 30-5 record as the starter.

The 2021 NFL Draft decision process is unlike any other before it. Because of the uncertainty surrounding the 2020 college season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, players that exhausted their eligibility at the college level may still opt to return for next season.

And on the other side of the conversation, college football saw a record number of opt outs for both COVID-19 reasons and in order to prepare for the NFL Draft. The preseason saw many projected stars choose to step away from the field to prepare, including Penn State’s Micah Parsons, LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase, Georgia’s Jamie Newman, Oregon’s Penei Sewell and Miami’s Gregory Rousseau. Midseason opt outs and the decision to skip bowl games were also a common place in 2020.

Activities like the NFL Scouting Combine and pro days remain uncertain due to the COVID-19 climate while the NFL Draft is scheduled to run April 29 through May 1. Last year’s NFL Draft took place virtually, including commissioner Roger Goodell announcing picks from his home. Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow was the No. 1 overall pick.
