ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- Malcolm Wood of Rocky River has lived both an artist’s life and an adventurer’s life.

After writing his first book 25 years ago, he got the bug and wrote eight more, primarily science fiction.

Now, he has three new ones ready to publish and another “in the oven,” so to speak.

Wood and his wife, Mary, are two very active, energetic people and have paid attention to, and taken part in, many issues and events in the city. They lead an interesting life and are the kind of people that, once in their company, one doesn’t want to leave. (Tell one more story, please.)

Wood doesn’t share everything about his life, but he did say he came to the United States at age 14 and graduated from Aurora High School, then earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Kent State University.

After graduation, he decided to fulfill a promise he had made to himself to travel around the world. He took two years to complete his travels, then resumed his chemistry career and also obtained a master’s degree in economics.

He became a petroleum and environmental engineer, which, he said, led to a career in finance and, later, environmental consulting.

Not surprisingly, he also wrote a book about his travels.

In his spare time, Wood began writing science fiction. As he wanted to perfect his writing skills, he attended writing workshops, joining the Cleveland Science Fiction Critiquing Group (also known as the Cajun Sushi Hamsters from Hell, he said), which counted among its members such writers as Geoff Landis, S. Andrew Swann, Charles Oberndorf and Maureen McHugh, all writers of science fiction and fantasy.

“Their critiques and comments pushed me hard to improve my craft,” he said.

Wood went on to create the West Side Writers Fiction critiquing group, “dedicated to writing at the highest professional level.”

Though Wood loves to spend time writing, he has other interests as well. He obtained a private pilot’s license and a competition driver’s license. He also enjoys skiing, hunting, wine tasting and gourmet food.

Sharing writing processes and tips with other writers is one of Wood’s favorite pastimes. He even has a “small booklet” of 60 to 70 pages on writing fiction that he gives to aspiring writers.

His five-book series of science fiction is available for purchase. Titles include “Clash of the Aliens,” “Collapse,” “Like a New Star,” “Stranger,” “The Blue Gem” and “Dawn.”

His novels can be purchased online at https://wordfirepress.com/.
