Netflix recently announced it will be adapting the “Redwall” book series.

The beloved children’s fantasy books will be turned into an animated feature film written by Patrick McHale of “Over the Garden Wall” fame. Netflix further stated it also plans to produce an events series based on the books’ sixth novel, “Martin the Warrior.”

Variety reports that this announcement marks the first time ever that the film rights to a book series have been completely held by the same company.

“We couldn’t be more delighted to announce this deal,” stated Ben Horslen, Fiction Publisher at the book’s publishing company, Penguin Random House Children’s. “These perennially popular stories have been etched onto the hearts of millions of readers, and we are thrilled to partner with Netflix to bring those beloved characters on screen for families worldwide to enjoy.”

The “Redwall” series is, indeed, “perennially popular.” Published between 1986 and 2011, the story follows that of human-like animals who live in Redwall Abbey and their various adventures. Spanning 22 books in total (plus two picture books), “Redwall” propelled Jacques—who unfortunately passed away in 20211—into international fame, with many critics praising him as one of “the best children’s authors in the world.”

Screen Crush confirms that over 30 million copies of the “Redwall” books were sold worldwide and has drawn comparisons to such other great literary works in the fantasy genre such as J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.”

Further information regarding the “Redwall” Netflix adaptations—including the release dates of both the film and the TV series—is pending.
