Camilla is known for her love of reading, and this year she launched an Instagram-based book club to share this enjoyment with others during lockdown. Today, the four titles in season two of The Duchess of Cornwall’s Reading Room have been announced. The latest recommendations range from a hit fantasy novel to a harrowing imagined depiction of the life of a woman abducted and married into the terrorist organisation Boko Haram. The four books and the dates they will be discussed are:

  1. The Secret Commonwealth, Philip Pullman (April 16th – 29th)
  2. Girl, Edna O’Brien (April 30th – May 13th)
  3. A Gentleman in Moscow, Amor Towles (May 14th – 27th)
  4. The Red Notebook, Antoine Laurain (May 28th – June 11th)

Each title will be explored on the reading room’s Instagram account for a fortnight with Clarence House sharing today that Camilla will provide new content as well as posting insight from the authors. “The Duchess of Cornwall’s Reading Room was inspired by the positive response to the reading lists published by Her Royal Highness at Easter and in the summer of 2020,” Clarence House shared in a statement. “It was this feedback that encouraged The Duchess to explore the idea of a more permanent community to enable readers to dive deeper into some of these titles, discover new ones, and celebrate literature.”

Season one of the book club highlighted novels including best-selling Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, which Camilla described as “heart-breaking.” At the end of the series, a video was posted online of Camilla saying a “huge thank you” to everyone who had participated. “We’re going to have a bit of a break now...we haven’t gone completely,” she said, adding: “I look forward to seeing you all again.”

The duchess is patron of seven organizations that focus on literacy including the National Literacy Trust and the Royal Society of Literature. Clarence House said: “Her Royal Highness has long been aware that reading promotes a wide range of emotional, social and educational benefits. The Duchess’s hope is that The Reading Room will encourage people of all ages and abilities to explore new books, creating opportunities for connection, engagement, and discourse.”
