Banijay-owned Truly Original has optioned Benjamin Lorr’s non-fiction book The Secret Life of Groceries: The Dark Miracle of the American Supermarket for a docuseries on the grocery industry.
Inspired by the book, the series will examine the reality of the modern American supermarket and the “passion, ingenuity and exploitation” grocers rely on to meet consumer demands: low prices, high quality and endless options.
Anchored by the American supermarket, Lorr (pictured) will travel across the country and around the world to the farms, factories, warehouses, food expos and commodity trading floors that define the American diet, learning directly from the industry’s buyers, brokers, entrepreneurs and” underworld operators.”
Blending investigative journalism and travelogue, the series will weave hands-on experiences and investigations in the field with intimate interviews.
Truly Original co-CEOs and executive producers Steven Weinstock and Glenda Hersh said in a statement: “Ben’s expertise, wit, deep curiosity and empathic nature make him an ideal tour guide through what he cites as the ‘miracle’ of the American supermarket. Coming off a year when appreciation for grocery stores is off the charts, and rightly so, we think this project will amaze viewers and really hit home.”
New York- and Los Angeles-based Truly Original’s roster of programming includes The Real Housewives of Atlanta, The Real Housewives of Potomac, Family Karma, Shahs of Sunset and Ink Master, The Last Cowboy, with executive producer Taylor Sheridan, Summer House, Winter House, Basketball Wives, Don’t Be Tardy and Swamp People , as well as the upcoming U.S. version of comedy panel show Would I Lie To You.
