Real Monarchs 0 vs. San Antonio FC 1

September 11, 2021; Zions Bank Stadium

Real Monarchs (4-14-4, 16 points); San Antonio FC (9-6-7, 34 points)

Man of the Match: Goalkeeper Jeff Dewsnup did his part between the pipes to keep the Monarchs within striking distance throughout the entirety of the match. In just his 13th professional start the 17-year-old recorded four big saves and made three clearances on the night. Including a diving, punch-out save of a curling shot aimed at the top right corner in the 53rd minute to keep San Antonio off the board until a deflected shot found its way through with 10 minutes left in the match. Additionally, Dewsnup won two duels on set pieces and completed 16 passes out of the back.

Telling Stat: The visitors attacked heavily from start to finish, but the Monarchs defense was largely up to the task. The team defended well for the majority of the match, allowing just one of 20 total shots to hit the back of the net. In addition to Dewsnup’s four saves and three clearances, defender Kevin Saucedo recorded a team-high six clearances. Five other members of the starting XI recorded two clearances each, combining for a team total of 19 clearances in the match, preventing San Antonio’s offense from prevailing.

What You Missed: Forward Charlie Wehan came on as a substitute in the 71st minute of the match, officially making his return from injury after missing the past three matches. Meanwhile, midfielder Brayan Gomez missed his seventh-consecutive match while goalkeeper Gavin Beavers, midfielder Sam Brown and forward Aris Briggs also missed the match due to injury. Additionally, defender Jaziel Orozco left the match with a head injury in the 63rd minute and was replaced by James Moberg. Moberg’s entrance marked his 99th appearance for the Real Monarchs, just one match away from becoming the second-ever to appear in 100 games.

What’s Next: After the previously scheduled match between the sides was postponed due COVID-19 protocols, Real Monarchs will now visit Hartford Athletic at Dillon Stadium on Wednesday, September 15 at 5:00 p.m. MT for a mid-week match in what will be the first-ever meeting between the sides.
