... moreGREENWICH — Looking for your next book? The doors to the Greenwich Library are still closed due to the coronavirus, but book lovers can now take out items again.
The Greenwich Library, along with its branches in Cos Cob and Byram and the independent Perrot Memorial Library in Old Greenwich, began offering no-contact pickup this week.
Library patrons can place reserves on books, DVDs or other items through the library’s website at www.greenwichlibrary.org/. Then they can reserve a time to pick them up outside the main entrance of the library location of their choice.
No one is allowed inside the libraries, and there is no physical contact with library staff. But this is a first step toward reopening after the coronavirus outbreak forced the Greenwich Library to close to the public on March 12.
“I want to be able to reopen when we feel confident we can take all the safety measures that are appropriate to keep the staff, patrons and construction workers safe and disinfected,” Greenwich Library director Barbara Ormerod-Glynn said.
Ormerod-Glynn said 2,000 new titles are ready for patrons to check out.
Also, library materials can now be returned at the book drops starting June 15 — 32,000 items are currently checked out. All due dates have been extended to July 1.
Since the closure in March, the Greenwich Library has held digital programming and allowed the checkout of eBooks, music, streaming video and other materials.
The library’s reference desk is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Patrons can call 203-622-7900 and staff can retrieve requested items.
