Connie R. Meester of Des Moines and Valorie Broadhurst Woerdehoff of Dubuque were named first place winners in the inaugural Marianne Blugar Book Awards for their book Tsugigami: gathering the pieces.
The book, awarded by Haiku Canada, is a selection of the authors’ collaborative linked verse spanning a 24-year partnership. In the book, Meester and Woerdehoff explore a wide range of topics from everyday life.
Haiku, originating in Japan, is a short poem that uses language to convey the essence of an experience of nature or the season intuitively linked to the human condition. Most haiku in English consist of three unrhymed lines of seventeen or fewer syllables.
Below is a haiku written by Meester which received the Haiku Society of America Harold G. Henderson Award Honorable Mention in 1997:
that Venus!
leading the cupped moon
through every turn of the road
