BOUND BROOK, NJ - Bound Brook resident Vincent Mirante has published his first children’s picture book in a series all about the antics of his real-life Yorkie, Rascal.
The first book, called “Moving Day,” is part of a series called “The Amazing Adventures of Rascal, Buddy, Lambie, Ducky and Squirrel.”
“Their family is moving, and the premise of the book is about overcoming their insecurity of making such a big change,” Mirante said. “Will they like their new home? Will they make new friends? Most importantly, what fun and adventure awaits them?”
Mirante said the book is first inspired by his real-life dog, Rascal.
“He keeps us laughing on a daily basis,” he said.
The second inspiration, Mirante said, is that he and his wife have been trying to adopt children for the last couple of years.
“We tried the private adoption route, which did not really work out very well,” he said. “At this point, we are working with the NJ DCF/Child Protection and Permanency team to qualify to adopt from the NJ foster system.”
Mirante said he and his wife got the idea to write children’s picture books while imagining fun, family activities to do with their children once the adoptions are complete.
“We’re still many months away from any adoptions, however, it hasn’t stopped me from pursuing the writing of the books,” he said.
“Moving Day” is the first in the series, with the second and third planned to be “The Clubhouse” and “The Amazing Race,” respectively.
In the second book, he said, Rascal, Buddy and their new friends will form a special Best Friends Club.
Mirante said he is also working on “The BFC Joke Book,” with a collection of animal-related jokes the characters will tell.
In addition to the books, Mirante is working on his author website and another dedicated to the picture book series, TheRascalBooks.com. The latter will have games, puzzles, songs and videos based on the book and their characters.
Children can also email Rascal, the star of the books, at rascal@TheRascalBooks.com for an autographed picture of the real dog. Mirante said the website will have a song ready to play when it launches, which children can download too.
“Ultimately, I just want to make little children laugh and smile,” he said. “Perhaps one day my own, but, for now, anyone willing to peruse my sites and read my books. I’ve recently joined the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators in an attempt to better my writing skills.”
The book is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble online.
