A trio of fabulous books for spring reading - Boston Herald

senewsberita.blogspot.com

As we start looking forward to a new season full of lazing on hammocks and sunny porches with a good book, now seems like the perfect time to debut my Spring Book Club, and to also introduce my first-ever author book chat (and yes, you’re definitely invited). Here are the great reads I’ve found for the season:

“It’s Not Complicated: Simple Recipes for Every Day,” by Katie Lee Biegel (Abrams, $29.99). Katie Lee is a friend who I’ve dined with so many times, and every time I’ve been inspired by her simple yet sophisticated spin on classic dishes — the kind of food my family and I never feel intimidated to make or get tired of eating. She’s the author of three cookbooks (“Endless Summer Cookbook,” “The Comfort Table” and “The Comfort Table: Everyday Occasions”), and is co-host of Food Network’s “The Kitchen,” host of Cooking Channel’s “Beach Bites with Katie Lee” and a judge for Food Network’s “Halloween Baking Championship.”

In her new book, she’s hit on something we can all relate to and want: dishes that are easy-going enough for weeknights, but special enough for having people over. In short, classic, unfussy sure-things.

I’m putting her book first and in the spotlight because I want to invite you to a special chat I’ll be having with her Friday, from 7 to 8 p.m. It will be an online and inexpensive (pay anything from a $5 donation to help our host — the small, independent local Wellesley Books — support its events program to $34.98 for attendance plus a copy of the book shipped to you). Join us, and we’ll be talking about all of her favorite easy-to-make recipes for spring, and celebrating Women’s History Month.

“Summer on the Bluffs,” by Sunny Hostin (William Morrow, $29.99). We’re all dreaming of breezy, warm days on Martha’s Vineyard as March winds down. In a few months, we might actually be there.

But in the meantime, the most direct route is by cracking open this new novel by the multitalented Sunny Hostin (who I love regularly joining on the TV show “The View”). This glorious piece of summer fiction takes us to Oak Bluffs, a slice of the island that’s been home to the Black community elite for summers since the 1600s. Come for the ethereal setting and beautifully drawn characters, stay for the family dynamics, personal secrets and wisdom revealed

“Fearless: The New Rules for Unlocking Creativity, Courage, and Success,” by Rebecca Minkoff, (Harper Collins Leadership, $25.99).  Anyone who’s ever worn the gorgeous creations of fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff knows about the depth of her vision, and that she’s got a whole lotta knowledge to drop about leadership. Tap into that knowledge by pre-ordering her forthcoming book (rebeccaminkoff.com/pages/fearless-the-new-rules-for-unlocking-creativity-courage-and-success) — it’ll be out this June.

That should get you started on spring. Now stay tuned for my Summer Book Club list, which I’ll share in June. Happy reading!
