Friends of Library book sales back online

The Friends of the Los Altos Library launched a website in October and then had to temporarily shut it down for lack of access to the library. The site – folbookshelf.org – is now back online.

For residents who miss the Friends of the Library’s quarterly book sales, which have been sidelined by the pandemic, the website offers the opportunity to replenish their bookshelves.

Patrons can view pictures of the books for sale online, pay for them by credit card and then pick up them up, just as they do for library holds.

The inventory includes used books in 20 categories, all in good to very good condition, priced to sell.

A large number of holiday books have been added to the selection, including some on St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and Passover, as well as cookbooks and children’s books.

All sales support the Los Altos main and Woodland Branch libraries.

CSA Empty Bowls campaign announced

Community Services Agency’s Empty Bowls campaign has teamed up with Appetite for Good to raise funds for homeless services and support local restaurants while feeding hungry residents. Instead of a soup supper, the Empty Bowls event will generate funds through a 10-day online campaign that runs Sunday through March 23.

In partnership with the nonprofit Appetite for Good, CSA will support local restaurants by offering donors the opportunity to purchase meal vouchers for hungry residents from restaurants that have donated to Empty Bowls and CSA’s food pantry in the past.

Participating restaurants that will be offering vouchers through Appetite for Good at appetiteforgood.org include: Armadillo Willy’s, Cascal, Chef Chu’s, Country Gourmet, Eric’s DeliCafe, Hobee’s, JW Catering, La Fiesta and Rustic House Oyster Bar & Grill.

To kick off the fundraising drive, the Empty Bowls Steering Committee has scheduled a free virtual event via Zoom 4 p.m. Sunday. Lawrence Chu, owner of Chef Chu’s, restaurant, will lead a cooking demonstration on how to make the restaurant’s signature wonton soup. The program will include brief remarks from CSA executive director Tom Myers, Empty Bowls chair Gisela Daetz, Appetite for Good director IdaRose Sylvester and CSA’s homeless services director Janice Bonello.

To RSVP, visit tinyurl.com/yv75kcnh. A Zoom link will be sent Saturday.
