KASSON, Minn. (KTTC) -- Last year before the pandemic, a historic Dodge County structure was in danger of being torn down.

Now, a few concerned residents have made steps to save it.

"More should know. there's several who do know," said Kasson resident Coralie Fiegel.

She is talking about the wall at the front of Kasson's Veterans Memorial Park. It built in 1938 by the Works Progress Administration.

"It means a lot," Fiegel said. "I grew up in the area and came through here all the time to work at the pool. It was important to have it at that time and to keep seeing it."

"Well, it is history," agrees another resident, Janet Sinner. "Kasson has this thing of tearing everything down and building new. At one point, there was a fireplace here."

Last year, the city of Kasson was quoted more than $200,000 to repair the wall.

Just like the fireplace in the park, the wall was in danger of disappearing into history before some residents stepped in.

"It started out as a GoFundMe account. It didn't go too far so we put it out on Facebook all over," Sinning said. "Then somebody came forward with money for an ad in the paper."

Money then starting coming in.

"People in the area and outside the area have given the money," Fiegel said. "We've raised $43,000 so far."

The funds give the project some starting ground.

"We just want to make sure that people know that we want to get all this wall saved, not just this main part," Sinning said. "There's two more sections. We want to save it all."

"We'd like to put up a little plaque too," Fiegel added.

A Decorah limestone restoration company plans to fix the wall.

"Retuck it and replace some of the stone. We have some of the stones from the fireplace," Sinning said. "The guy that's coming up from Decorah is going to use some of that limestone and put in here. It will still be the original stones. That's kind of neat."

"We're really happy with the community for coming forward," Fiegel said. "It's been great to have that support from them."

They also hope to secure $30,000 from the state of Minnesota's Legacy Fund grant and are still taking donations.
