This month we've brought you two wildly different books, both fiction and non-fiction, to highlight everything we celebrate in June!
Our producer has chosen a novel called “Sharks in the Time of Saviors” by Kawai Strong Washburn” as June’s Read Carolina pick! The story starts in Hawaii in 1995 when seven-year-old Nainoa falls off a boat and into the ocean. He would’ve died had a shark not saved his life. When Noa begins to develop unusual powers, everyone believes he’s been blessed by the Hawaiian gods. But his gift is also what tears his struggling family apart. Years later when tragedy strikes, they are all forced to reconsider what it truly means to be family. This book is written from multiple perspectives in beautiful, and gritty, lyrical prose. It perfectly highlights intricate family dynamics, Hawaiian culture, and the magical realism genre.
The honorary mention this month goes to a memoir called “Why Peacocks? An Unlikely Search for Meaning in the World’s Most Magnificent Bird” and was written by semi-local author Sean Flynn, who currently resides in North Carolina. This book details the decision his family made to raise three peacocks and the events that followed. It has really cute antidotes about his kids, his wife, and his animals. The author also uncovers a very thorough history on peacocks including how they were introduced to the United States, the meaning behind the birds in different religious contexts, and so much more. It’s fun, it’s informational, and it tugs at your heart strings. A perfect Father’s Day read.
You can purchase “Sharks in the Time of Saviors” at Amazon or Barnes and Noble. You can also find “Why Peacocks? An Unlikely Search for Meaning in the World’s Most Magnificent Bird” at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. If you join our monthly book club, please let us know what you think!
