When it comes to popular earbuds, few are as ubiquitous as Apple's AirPods. The AirPods Pro and standard AirPods models are frequently on sale, but Prime Day AirPods deals see them drop to some of their lowest prices of the year.

The AirPods Pro are now $30 off their typical street price of $220. The same deal is also available at Walmart and at Target during its 'Target Deal Days.' The AirPods with wireless charging case are down to $150, which is a modest discount from their usual street price of $160. The entry-level AirPods with wired charging case are also on sale, coming in at $10 below their regular asking price of around $129.

How to shop for headphones

Headphones are available in different styles and sizes to suit different uses and budgets. Some people might prefer earbuds for portability, while others may want a pair of high-end over-ear headphones to prioritize audio quality.

Below, we've explained some common headphone types, detailing the key advantages and disadvantages of each. Wired and wireless options are available for all of the headphone styles listed.

  • Earbuds: If portability is your main priority, earbuds are your best option since they use separate, compact buds designed to rest just outside or within your ear canal. True wireless models, like the AirPods Pro, are even more convenient since they're completely free from cables. Some earbuds also include sweat and water resistance, which makes them perfect for the gym.
  • Over-ear headphones: This kind of headphone features large ear cups that cover your ears to create a seal. This makes them bigger than other styles, which could limit portability. Generally, this type of headphone is a good fit for people who favor sound quality and comfort over compact design. We've also found that over-ear models with active noise cancellation (ANC) tend to block sound better than other headphone styles with ANC.
  • On-ear headphones:  This type of headphone also uses ear cups, but instead of covering your ear with a seal, they simply rest on top. They can still provide good audio, but this design makes them less ideal for isolating noise. On the plus side, on-ear models can be more compact than over-ear headphones.
