Summer is finally here, and with it come opportunities to attend festivals, participate in outdoor recreation, and enjoy large-scale events. While many people enjoy bringing their children to parades, concerts, and hikes, some may not be aware of important safety tips specific to kids.

Fremont Adventure Recreation, along with the Fremont Health and Wellness, Cañon City Police Department, Cañon City Fire Department, and Fremont Search and Rescue, are pleased to offer local families a free resource to begin conversations about how to help children stay safe this summer – an Outdoor Recreation Adventure Safety coloring book with safety tips specific to the Royal Gorge Region.

The book is available at the John C. Fremont Library in Florence, the Penrose Community Library, and the Cañon City Public Library.

“The safety book covers the basics of hiking safety, biking safety, and even safety on the river,” said Fremont Health and Wellness Director Brian VanIwarden. “We have some fantastic opportunities for outdoor recreation in this area, but it’s also important to help children to know proper safety.”

While the coloring book is designed for children ages 5-11, its message is applicable to people of all ages.

One of the most important messages, according to the Cañon City Fire Department, is to help children to learn their parent or guardian’s phone number. In a situation where a child is separated from their parent, knowing how to get in contact with a trusted adult can drastically expedite a reunion. In an outdoor situation, one of the most helpful tips, according to Fremont Search and Rescue, is for kids to “hug a tree” if they’re lost. This assures that they stay put and don’t wander further from their last point of contact with their party.

The safety booklet also includes such helpful safety tips as:

— Always wear a helmet on a bicycle.
— Know your riding and hiking ability.
— Bring the essentials when going out for a hike or bike ride.
— Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) or life jacket in the river.
— Stay on the trail.
— Pick up litter and waste.
— Hug a tree if you’re lost.
— Memorize your parent or guardian’s phone number.

“Especially with the river levels coming up, we also want to make sure that people know they should be wearing life jackets at all times when rafting, boating, or swimming in the river,” VanIwarden said. “Royal Gorge RIO, the City of Cañon City, and the Rec Department have done a tremendous job providing ‘loaner’ life jackets at Centennial Park, and those are free for anyone to borrow.”

The safety coloring book will be made available to school health professionals in all RE-1 schools in May and was distributed to students.

Parents or guardians are welcome to pick up copies of the Adventure Safety Guide coloring book at local libraries in Florence, Penrose, and Cañon City. This free resource is a great way to start conversations with kids about safety. For more information, email Ashlee Sack at coordinator@joinFAR.org.
