Potential Giants post-June 1 cuts to save money, and possible free agency targets coming available - NJ.com

senewsberita.blogspot.com

More than most years, June 1 could make the first day of a flurry of blockbuster moves, whether that’s cutting notable players or trading them.

The reason: Cutting or trading a player after June 1 allows a team to spread out their dead cap penalty over multiple years instead of incurring it all in 2021. So, this could lead to moves sending big-name players like Julio Jones, Aaron Rodgers and Zach Ertz to new teams.

It should also lead to a wave of cuts, claims and players that have been lingering in free agency finally finding a home.

The Giants aren’t expected to be active, especially as a team with only $4.6 million in cap space and not many more obvious avenues to clear cap space without dumping players projected to start.

But maybe they won’t be completely inactive. Here’s a look at some players they might consider cutting or trading and others they could pursue in free agency:

Potential Giants post-June 1 cut/trade candidates

CB Sam Beal (cut): The Giants picking Beal in the third-round of the supplemental draft in 2018 looks like one of the worst moves of the Dave Gettleman era. He’s played in six games in three years and opted not to attend voluntary OTAs even after he opted out of the season last year. Beal has had basically no in-person face-time with this coaching staff, which wasn’t even around when he was drafted, and now they’re loaded at corner. He’s already a long shot to make the roster and cutting him now would save $851,118.

P Riley Dixon (cut): The Giants have stuck with him all offseason and seem unlikely to cut him now, though he did struggle last year and axing Dixon now would save $2.8 million with minimal ($125,000) penalty. Ryan Santoso is in the building to push him.

TE Evan Engram (trade): Another one that, at this point, it seems unlikely the Giants move on, especially since veteran Kyle Rudolph is recovering from offseason foot surgery. Trading Engram would save $6 million though.

Potential post-June 1 targets

LB Jordan Hicks (Cardinals): The Cardinals gave the longtime former Eagles linebacker permission to seek a trade and it seems unlikely he garners much more than a conditional late-round pick, if that. Hicks, though, is a highly productive player (268 tackles, four interceptions the last two years in Arizona) and has been a decent coverage linebacker in the past too. He’s not a star, but at the right price he’d be an upgrade over the Giants’ current options at inside linebacker.

RB Sony Michel (Patriots): The Patriots don’t necessarily need to cut him yet, and probably won’t, but if they wind up being the team that reels in Julio Jones, cutting Michel would save them a little bit of money (about $1.2 million). The Patriots’ backfield is all of a sudden crowded as Damien Harris is ahead of Michel in the pecking order, James White was re-signed, they drafted Rhamondre Stevenson in the fourth round and New England is high on second-year J.J. Taylor. The Giants have shown a willingness to take fliers on veteran running backs this offseason and many on the coaching staff (including Joe Judge) are well familiar with Michel.

WR Julio Jones (Falcons): No, the Giants probably aren’t going to trade for the star Falcons wide receiver, and it’s hard to blame them after all the investment they’ve already made at the position this offseason between Kenny Golladay and first-round pick Kadarius Toney. But it’s worth at least mentioning the best non-quarterback that could be acquired starting on Tuesday.

Other free agents worth considering (non-June 1 cuts)

G Trai Turner: He’s still lingering in free agency and if his price goes down, the possibility of adding him at least can’t be ruled out. If he’s healthy, Turner would be the best guard on the Giants roster.

RB Rex Burkhead: Another former Patriots running back that the coaching staff is well familiar with and can play on special teams.

EDGE Adrian Clayborn: A veteran edge rusher with Patriots ties. The Giants are lacking for veterans at edge.
