LE MARS — Whether you want a quick read for a fall night, books for when the grandchildren visit, or ideas for the upcoming holidays, come and check out the Friends of the Le Mars Public Library Book Sale Thursday to Saturday, Oct. 21-23.

Sale hours are 5-8 p.m., Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, with the sale held at 520 Fourth St. S.W., across from KwikStar.

Mary Albrecht and a couple of Friends volunteers were on hand to unpack boxes of books and sort them by category one afternoon in early October.

Albrecht, who is also the treasurer of Friends, said they’ve unpacked boxes and boxes of books.

“You know, we didn’t have any book sales during 2020 due to COVID,” Albrecht said.

“In March 2021 we did the grab bag sale at the library. We were very successful,” she said. “And then we did a book sale at this location in July. That was very well-attended.”

Yes, they had books leftover and more have come in since.

“We’ve probably unpacked three to four dozen boxes of books since July,” she added.

The books cover a wide array of topics, from romance to mystery, non-fiction to cookbooks, craft books and books for young children.

“We have a large selection of kids stuff,” she said.

Some of the books even have Le Mars Public Library labels on them.

“We buy them from the library, at a very discounted price. They are not given to us, we buy them. People donate other books, their own, too,” she said.

The group has organized its space by topic and has every nook and cranny filled with books.

Albrecht gives credit to member Shawn Brooks in setting up the shelving categories to better sort and browse the books.

Hardcover books are $2, with papers selling for $1. CDs and DVDs are priced at $1. Board books (children’s large books) are sold for $1, even though they are hardback, Albrecht said.

The group has also received some book sets, too.

“People are welcome to make us an offer, for example on some sets that are available,” she said.

There are also bags of books by topic, available for a special price.

Albrecht said Saturday there will be a “Buy one get one free offer” on books.

“We may have some other specials, but will see how the sale goes the other days,” she said.

Friends of the Le Mars Public Library is an advocate organization to promote and support the Le Mars Public Library. Friends helps raise the awareness of the library in the community by sponsoring programs within the library as well as doing work behind the scenes to help make the facility relevant to all the residents of the greater Le Mars area.

Albrecht explained that Friends funds library programs, like the summer reading program, the summer, fall and winter adult reading program, buys bookmarks which are given free to patrons at the library, and purchases The Book Page which is given free and tells about the latest in books.

“If we have speakers come in to the library, we might pay their speaker fees and travel costs,” Albrecht noted.

“One of our biggest projects is coming up the end of the month, the Books for Treats on Oct. 30,” she said. “We fund a lot of those little extras. That way the taxpayers don’t have to.”

Albrecht also shared her thoughts on what books mean for people.

“I think books create your future or create a better future,” Albrecht said.

“For example, the summer reading program is amazing as far as attendance goes. My four kids did every year they could of summer reading. They didn’t miss a day,” she said.

As far as the Friends group, membership is open to anyone.

“We have several dozen paid members. Our attendance at meetings has been low since the pandemic started,” she said. “We have lots of paid members who write a check every year to stay as a member.”

Albrecht concluded, “We have a great library and a great staff. They are so good to work with.”
