Andrew J. Pignatare, founder of the Westfield and West Springfield accounting firm Pignatare & Sagan that bears his name, had a gift for numbers from a young age, but now the retired certified public accountant has turned his attention to words.

His first book, “Becoming JoJo MacBean,” released in April, espouses a balance of career and personal life, “which is sometimes very difficult to do for a lot of professionals and people who own their own businesses,” he says. “I was definitely a workaholic during my career. Luckily I loved what I was doing, serving many individuals and small businesses.”

The main character of his book, JoJo MacBean, is willing to work hard to makes his dreams come true. He formulates his dreams, puts them into action and works hard. That precious dream is always paramount in his life, but does his focus blind him to the balance needed in that life?

Pignatare emphasizes to youth the importance of their mindset. “The earlier you start thinking about what you want to do, the better off you’ll be,” he said. “I’m not asking you to give up your childhood, but I want you to give your future some consideration. Determination gave me a good career, but looking back I worked very hard and it (affected) my health. Luckily the doctor gave me a warning, and I learned from that quickly.”

Appealing to readers age 13 and older, “Becoming JoJo MacBean” was but a draft until Pignatare retired in 2016. He worked on the manuscript some more, and at the end of 2018, he hired a ghostwriter.

“She read my final draft and thought I had a very interesting story to tell,” he says. “All I can say is ‘thank God’ for my team to help me put this book together. The ghostwriter made a few changes to the book after collaborating with me, and that made my story even better.”

A Westfield native, Pignatare worked in his father’s pizza shop and variety store through high school, then attended Babson College.

He remembers that when he was 9 he was reading the sports page and saw an ad that proclaimed, “Become an accountant make good money.” He asked his father what an accountant was, and his father told him the next time he had his taxes done he would take him to see his accountant.

“I went to this accountant’s office with my dad, and I saw him working on my dad’s taxes with an adding machine for about an hour,” Pignatare recalls. “I just watched him the total hour. After we left the office, I told my dad that I wanted to be an accountant.”

He believes that the younger people are when they consider their future, the better their chance of success. “I love to lecture to youth about their futures anytime I get the chance to. It is a rewarding experience if I can help anyone get a good start in life. That is what life is about,” he said.

Pignatare is now working on a children’s book, which he hopes will get children to begin thinking about their future. “I just want to get their thought process going at an earlier age. I find that too many students in high school and college never give much thought on what they want to do for a career, and to me there is much wasted time when they graduate because they had no major thought process on this topic,” he said.

Pignatare likes to read about successful business people, their biographies and their careers. He also enjoys playing golf, watching action movies, watching baseball, walking, cooking, biking and going to the YMCA.

He and his wife of 30 years, TerryAnn, have one son, Clint, and two collies.

Published by Tennessee-based IngramSpark, the hardcover “Becoming JoJo MacBean” has 222 pages with cover artwork by Easthampton artist Kinga Martin. The book sells for $24.99; the eBook is $9.99.

They can be purchased on Pignatare’s website, jjmacd.com. A book tour was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Pignatare plans to begin the tour as soon as possible.
