In his new book Shipwrecks of the Outer Banks, author James D. Charlet explores the stories of daring rescues, tragic failures, enduring mysteries, buried treasure and fascinating legends of so many ships that fell victim to our treacherous coastline.

Charlet taught North Carolina history for 24 years, has worked with the Wright Brothers National Memorial, the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site, leads tours, educational programs and contributes to local and national media with his articles on nautical history and the Outer Banks.

Charlat will be in full period regalia at a book signing at Downtown Books on Friday, July 24 from noon until 2 p.m. All socially distancing protocol, including the use of masks by all attendees and six foot distancing, will be followed. For more information, call Downtown Books at 252-473-1056.
