KETCHUM, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) - A local Sun Valley Community School teacher has spent much of the past 5 years writing a book about Ernest Hemingway and his ties to the Wood River Valley.

As an English teacher at the Sun Valley Community School, Phil Huss teaches a class called ‘Hemingway’ and one of the student’s projects is to research the local Hemingway memorials.

“Out of that I realized that the stories that the students were researching and the documentary films that they were making became really informative, it became important to their ability to understand Hemingway’s connection to the Wood River Valley in particular,” said Phil Huss, the author and teacher. “Also help students understand the characters and the themes and the heroes in the novels and short stories and that is when I realized there is a book in this.”

The book is called Hemingway’s Sun Valley: Local stories behind his code, character and crisis, and will be released on Monday July 20th.

“Hemingway had this heroic code, and I’ve codified it into ten different principals, so I take principals like ‘complete tasks well, value mentors and community, self-assess, value nature,' and then I show how the local stories of his time here in the Wood River Valley manifest that principal, how he valued the hunting guides that he hunted with here in Ketchum and Gooding,” said Huss.

Hemingway finished his novel ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ at the Sun Valley Lodge in Room 206, where they have a Hemingway memorial today.

“He would wake up in the morning at room 206 in the Sun Valley Lodge, he would get up at first light and start writing, a lot of people don’t know this but he would write standing up, Now a lot of people have stand up desks but Hemingway was doing it back in the 30′s,” said Huss.

Huss will be giving a book talk at 6 p.m. on July 21st, which is Hemingway’s birthday, at the Ketchum Community Library where you can meet him and have your book signed.

If you were to pick up ‘A Farewell to Arms’ and read it along with my book ‘Hemingway’s Sun Valley,' I think it would really enhance your understanding of the heroic code and how it manifests or doesn’t manifest in some of the characters,” said Huss.

The book will be for sale locally at Chapter One Bookstore, Iconoclast Bookstore, Atkinsons’ Markets, Sun Valley History Museum, Silver Creek Outfitters, and Lost River Outfitters, as well as on Amazon.
