Karen Kingsbury has written another wonderful story about the Baxter family. Although many of her stories are based on the Baxter family, this one can be considered a standalone book.

Someone Like You by Karen Kingsbury

As Brook Baxter West and Peter West sit at their daughter’s college graduation, they celebrate her accomplishments. But Brook worries about the secret that they have kept for so many years. As a young married couple, they struggled with infertility. After so many times of unsuccessfully trying to get pregnant, they were ready to explore other options. Then a special opportunity came up for them.

A friend and fellow doctor approached the couple with a chance of a lifetime. A colleague of his had gained ownership of some frozen embryos. Embryo adoption was never anything they had considered but they were thrilled with the chance for Brook to carry a baby.

They never told anyone about the situation; their families never knew that infertility was ever a problem for them. When she gave birth to a healthy baby girl, they named her Madison and the details of her conception didn’t seem important at the time. They would tell her when she got older. Brook always wanted to tell Maddie the truth but the time never seemed right.

The author then introduces us to Dawson. He is a very accomplished business man that specializes in transforming old run down properties into high dollar real estate along the river in Washington. Over the years he has become very financially successful but still does not consider himself happy.

For so many years he has been in love with London, his high school friend. She, however, has always only considered Dawson a very special friend. While London dates other men, Dawson waits for the day that she will realize his feelings for her. Then a terrible accident takes London from Dawson. As he grieves for the only girl that he has ever loved, he discovers that she may have a sibling from a frozen embryo that her parents donated years ago and he goes in search of her.

When Dawson finds Maddie, he upsets her entire life. Everything that Maddie believed was suddenly a lie. It breaks Brook’s heart when Maddie leaves Indiana to find the answers to the questions she now has.

This is a very emotional book by a fantastic author. If this is your first Karen Kingsbury book or if you are a long time follower of her, this is a wonderful story.
