Kansas City Library is introducing a new kind of book club in 2021: the Whenever Book Club. The virtual book club “will connect through a private forum where all participants can discuss the current book and network with each other.” In other words, if you’d like to be part of this book club but have an erratic or busy calendar, or just aren’t sure if you’ll have time to finish reading the book club’s selection by a certain date, you don’t have to worry, because you can participate at any time (“whenever”) that suits your schedule.
The Whenever Book Club will read one book every two to three months, a more relaxed schedule than the monthly reads of many other book clubs. Their first selection for January 2021 is the New York Times bestseller dark fantasy horror novel Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff (HarperCollins), the basis for the HBO show of the same name.
The book club is open to both members and non-members of The Kansas City Public Library. Library cardholders will be able to check out the book club’s selections as ebooks for free, while non-cardholders are responsible for acquiring their own copy of the book.
According to the book club’s website, “The texts selected will be lifelong learning, personal growth, fiction, non-fiction, and other genres and take an average of nine hours to read cover to cover.” The group will vote between selections and “select a book based on reader interests.”
Examples of possible future selections listed on the site include a mix of fiction and nonfiction such as The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? by Jeanette Winterson, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer by Michelle McNamara, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven R. Covey, Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly and The Queen’s Gambit by Walter Tevis, among others.
The library is partnering with PBC (Professional Book Club) Guru to host the book club. A PBC moderator will manage the club’s online forum and pose questions to attendees as well as post relevant articles and facilitate conversations.
The Whenever Book Club is just one of many book groups the Kansas City Public Library offers, although the others meet at specific times. In January, the library’s North-East Book Group will also be reading The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, while their Readers for Social Justice Book Group will read Mean by Myriam Gurba, Queer Voices Book Group will read Butter Honey Pig Bread by Francesca Ekwuyasi, Books and Brews Book Group will read The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, Baristas Book Group will read The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka, Great Books KC Book Group will read The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow, Southeast Literary Lions Book Group will read Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, Literature In Translation Book Group will read The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George and Friends of the Library Book Group will read Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney.
