Is the religious right asking these questions?

Brad Jolly asserts “Perhaps Trump voters ask different questions … ” regarding the who and why of the universe (TC guest opinion, Dec. 21). Based on the editorial’s bend into religion, the “different questions” proposition appears to include the Christian right.

Indeed, they do ask different questions. But I wonder if they question why following the advice on stoning unruly children to death as prescribed in Deuteronomy 21:18-21 might be immoral? Regarding Luke 14:26: Do the pious ask why Jesus’ prescription of hating one’s “father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sister — yes, even his own life” are required in order to be his “disciple”? Do the devout ask why their infinitely powerful creator is still a victim of his own petty emotions like anger and jealousy as demonstrated by the flood induced omnicide in Genesis 6:9-7:24 or in the hate-filled extortion speech in Leviticus 26:27-30? Do the reverent ponder why they will label me a Christian hate speech writer for merely quoting their book and asking them about it?

Do the God-fearing consider why it is immoral to seize funds from the nonreligious in terms of tax waivers to fund their places of worship, practice pedophilia there and pay chaplains to invocate in our secular government? Do they ask why it might be exclusionary to have a  Pledge of Allegiance with the word “god” in it for a country that is 20% non-religious? Do the godly ask why the abortion rate has declined steadily since 1981? Do they wonder why the most significant drops occurred under Democratic administrations? Do the enraptured ask why their god performs 24,000 abortions via miscarriage every year and sanctioned worldwide childhood deaths of 5.4 million in 2017? Do the enlightened ask why their deity developed hell, the ultimate distillation of hate, a place where never-ending suffering is bestowed on good, moral people who simply chose not to believe something because there was no evidence for it?

Writing its own “spiritual and metaphysical reality” rule book, religion becomes a justification for any type of behavior and a formidable tool for wielding power.
