“The Highlights Book of Things to Do: Discover, Explore, Create, and Do Great Things” ($24.99, Highlights Press): This is a great book to hand to a kid, seven and older, who’s on the verge of being bored. With 500 action ideas that are fun and simple, like making crystallized rock candy or writing in secret code, genuine curiosity blows away the thought that there’s nothing to do.

Hands-on projects, from farming to painting, guarantee a boy or girl will find something of interest within the 384 pages.

There’s a red ribbon bookmark sewn into the thick, hardcover book, but don’t expect kids to move orderly from front to back. In fact, it was designed for them to jump around, flip pages (there’s even instructions on how to make a moving-picture flip book).

Most of what’s needed to try something new are common household items. Shake uncooked rice in a paper lunch bag to mimic the sound of rain. Or put on a show; it starts with a laundry basket filled with costumes.

Outdoor activities range from growing plants in a bucket to making a plaster cast of animal tracks.

Illustrations are informative, colorful and cute, engaging little ones who are attracted to visuals more than written instructions.

In the car, kids can practice tongue twisters. Try this one: “A big black bug bit a big black dog.” Or test their knowledge with fact-filled trivia questions.

Safety is a priority throughout the activity book, even when building a campfire and conducting science experiments.

There are also suggestions on repairing a friend’s hurt feelings in the “Do Great Things” chapter. Even the Earth gets a break. Recyclable paper straws are used rather than plastic ones.

Highlights magazine started in 1946 with the educational mission of kids doing things. This new book makes it easy to jump into action.
