A’s suffer another late game collapse, Lou Trivino blows second straight save in loss to Mariners - Vacaville Reporter

Lou Trivino blew his second save in his last two appearances, the Seattle Mariners coming back in the ninth inning to beat the A’s 5-3 on Monday night.
It was another chapter in what’s become a demoralizing few weeks for the A’s bookended by the loss of ace Chris Bassitt, hit by a line drive in the face, to losing three straight games via late-inning collapse. Oakland lost two on late, lead-changing home runs against the San Francisco Giants over the weekend.
They also lost a chance to gain ground on the Houston Astros, who lost to the Kansas City Royals earlier on Monday. The A’s remain 3.5 games back for first place in the American League West. With New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox wins, the A’s fall one game back of the Red Sox for the second wild card spot and out of at least a share of a playoff spot for the first time since April 17.
The Mariners creep even closer to the A’s spot, now three games back of a wild card spot. With August winding down, the A’s are in the thick of a postseason pinch.
Bullpen woes
The A’s entered the ninth inning with a 3-2 lead and left it with a two-run deficit. Ty France, one of Seattle’s hottest hitters, hit a game-tying home run off Trivino to start the ninth inning. Back-to-back hits from Abraham Toro and Jake Fraley put runners on second and third with no outs.
Trivino looked to have bounced back, striking out the next two batters and getting Jake Bauers down to his last strike, but he hit a single into left field to score both and give the Mariners their lead.
It marked Trivino’s second straight blown save following his outing against the Giants in which LaMonte Wade Jr. hit a go-ahead home run in the ninth inning in Saturday’s loss. The two home runs are the first Trivino has given up since June 30 and marked the first back-to-back blown saves for Trivino this season, Monday was his fourth overall.
“France is having a really good year, and then double and has a chance to get out of it. Strikes out the next guy, two strikes on the third guy. Just couldn’t get the third strike across. A couple tough outings for him,” manager Bob Melvin said. “His velo was actually better than we’ve seen it. First couple pitches were 96, 97. Just tough back-to-back games as far as results go.”
Melvin was asked if he’s changed his opinion on Trivino seeing more opportunities in the ninth inning. Melvin said Trivino will see a lighter work load in the immediate, won’t pitch on Tuesday and said, “We’ll get through the off day and see where we’re at.”
Paul Blackburn’s outing
Since Blackburn joined the rotation in Chicago last week, he’s strung together two solid starts, including a 5 2/3 inning. Mitch Haniger’s game-tying two-run home run in the sixth inning erased the possibility of his first big league win this season. All 12 runs the A’s have allowed dating back to Aug. 20 have come via the home run.
But it followed a five, strong scoreless innings in which Blackburn struck out five batters and allowed three hits.
“I thought he pitched well. One pitch to a guy that’s a pretty good hitter. If we score a few more runs we’re talking about a really good game he pitched. We didn’t do enough offensively or put enough pressure on them to give him a lead, but for a first two looks, pitched really well.”
Offense wasn’t much help
The spotlight is harsher on a bullpen when it blows thin leads, but blame is to share with an offense that can’t create separation.
Yan Gomes and Matt Olson hit solo home runs off Mariners left-handed starter Marco Gonzales, typically an indication that the A’s offense is trending anemic.
Gomes’ home run came in the fourth inning, extending the A’s lead to 2-0. Mark Canha scored the A’s first run in the first inning. He led the game off with a single and Olson singled to advance him; the pair combined for a successful double steal and Gomes’ ground out scored Canha. Olson’s home run, his 32nd home run of the year, came after Mitch Haniger’s two-run home run off Paul Blackburn.
