Join Los Alamos County Library for “Save Food, Save Money, Save the Planet” workshop on preventing food waste led by Sue Barns at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26.
This will be a hybrid program, presented in-person at the Mesa Public Library in Meeting Room 3 and streaming via Zoom. The event is presented in partnership with Zero Waste Los Alamos. Online attendees, please register on the library events calendar.
Want to make a simple change that will reduce your carbon footprint, save water, and help the environment? How about if that change will also help you feed your family better, stay healthier, and save thousands of dollars every year? Can it be as simple as learning how not to waste food?
Learn from Barns about the issue of food waste, it’s local and global impacts, and how to prevent it in your own home. This workshop will introduce many easy steps you can take to save time, save money, and save the planet. Attendees will have the opportunity to receive a free Food Waste Prevention Toolkit from Los Alamos County.
Barns started recycling at a very young age and continues to seek new ways to prevent waste and pollution. After obtaining her PhD in Microbiology, she came to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) on an Oppenheimer Postdoctoral Fellowship.
She continued working in the Biosciences Division, doing research on biothreat detection and soil microbial community responses to climate change, before changing careers to train service dogs for people with disabilities.
In 2015, she resumed focus on environmental issues, volunteering at Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), serving on the Los Alamos Environmental Sustainability Board and Zero Waste Teams, and most recently on the Resiliency, Energy and Sustainability Task Force.
