Author Davalynn Spencer’s book, “An Impossible Price,” was named best Western novel in the 2021 American Fiction Awards, sponsored by American Book Fest.

“I was honored to receive this recognition,” she said. “It is always encouraging to be chosen from such a stellar field of Western novelists.”

“An Impossible Price” is the third book in Spencer’s Front Range Brides series set on Colorado’s Front Range. The series looks at the lives of three women living in or near the fictional town of Olin Springs in the 1800s.

“Cañon City and the surrounding area is always in my mind’s eye when I write these novels,” Spencer said. “We have a strong Western heritage and such beautifully rugged surroundings, that it doesn’t take much to imagine these people as actual residents here in centuries gone by.”

Spencer is a former Prorodeo Sports News journalist and Cañon City Daily Record reporter and columnist. She taught English Composition and Creative Writing at the Fremont Campus of Pueblo Community College and currently speaks at writing workshops, seminars and special events. Her work has garnered the Will Roger’s Gold Medallion for Inspirational Western Fiction and landed on the ECPA Fiction and Publisher’s Weekly bestseller lists.

Spencer’s books are available locally at Tailored West, Kaleidoscope and the Cañon City Public Library, and can be found on her website, www.davalynnspencer.com, and at various online retailers.

Area Agency on Aging seeks volunteer

The Area Agency on Aging is seeking a volunteer to serve as an advocate for residents in long-term care. Nursing home residents and assisted living residents retain all their legal rights when they enter a home or assisted living.

Volunteer Ombudsmen are trained to protect residents’ rights. Fremont County is in need of a Volunteer Ombudsman to be a voice for the residents to assess problems and to come to a resolution. Once trained, volunteers are asked to spend just a few hours a month in this important and life-changing program. Mileage is reimbursed and letters of recommendation are available to those who qualify.

To obtain more information on the Volunteer Ombudsman program or to request a volunteer application, call Terri Gerstmeyer, regional ombudsman, at 719-539-3341.

Summer’s End First Friday Art Walk

The Artists’ Gallery at 416 Main St. invites the community and visitors on Friday for the summer’s end First Friday artist’s reception. Doors will be open from 5-8 p.m. for an evening of art, spirited conversation and live classical guitar music performed by talented Gregory Carlson.

Throughout September the gallery will feature the artwork of these three accomplished artists:

Multi-media artist, Diana Werthman, has always been gifted with creating the most beautiful things out of seemingly nothing. Her 3-dimensional artwork includes meticulously hand-crafted pine needle baskets and stunning embellished gourd vessels. She is also an extraordinary watercolor artist, rendering exquisite paintings of birds, horses, flora and fauna, among her subjects.  Additionally, she designs and decorates the gallery’s window displays in her uniquely creative style.

Jewelry artist and owner of Rockin’ L Designs, Linda Ouellette’s jewelry truly captures the modern flair of today’s southwest. Selecting bold, striking focal stones as inspiration for each piece,  she completes her artistic vision with skill and panache. She is constantly stimulated by her love of the West and interprets that love into her distinctively original jewelry designs.

Always with his camera at his side, award-winning photographer, Mel Williamson, records the world around him.  While on exploratory excursions throughout Colorado, Wyoming and Montana, he expertly captures the most spectacular images.  He has had the good fortune over many years to study under several well-known photographers and has also taught digital photography classes.
