7 Airfare Hacks That Can Save Big Money, Backed By Research - Forbes

senewsberita.blogspot.com

For the seventh year running, Expedia teamed up with Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC) to reveal money-saving tips gleaned from crunching the numbers from the world’s most comprehensive airfare transaction dataset, comprising more than 300 million passenger trips.

The timing of the partnership’s latest report on airfare trends is fortuitous. Prices for flights hit bottom almost a year ago during the December 2020-January 2021 holiday season, but since then, airfares have steadily risen and are nearly back to pre-pandemic levels.

The biggest take-away from the research: The flexible bird gets the worm. Travelers willing to make even small adjustments to their travel plans can reap noticeable benefits.

Here are five simple travel hacks that can shave dollars off your airfare spend.

Book flights on Sunday. This solid advice from past years is still true in late 2021. In general, making your travel purchase on a Sunday will save you an average of 5% on domestic flights and 10% on international airfares.

In previous years, the Expedia-ARC report revealed that the worst day to book domestic plane tickets is Monday, when prices run an average of 15% higher than on Sunday. For international trips, steer clear of booking on Friday, which can yield prices 20% above what you’ll find on Sunday.

Book at least four weeks ahead for domestic flights. The sweet spot to book a domestic flight is between 28 and 35 days in advance of departure, according to ARC data. If you wait much longer, you may regret it. Airfares for flights within the U.S. usually start to increase 21 days prior to departure.

Book three to four months ahead for international trips. For the very lowest prices, the ideal time to buy international flights is three to four months prior to your departure date. Prices start to noticeably ramp up 28 days in advance of departure.

Begin a domestic trip on Friday. For U.S. travel, kicking off your roundtrip travel on a Friday will generally yield savings of more than 15% compared to departures on other days. It is generally cheaper to kick off a trip in the second half of the week (Wednesday through Saturday) compared with the first half (Sunday through Tuesday).

Begin an international trip on Thursday. This is the cheapest day to start an overseas trip, delivering savings of more than 5% compared to flying out of the U.S. on Tuesday.

Take domestic trips in January. If your aim is to spend the least amount possible, the ideal month to fly in the U.S. is January, when airfare costs are 10% below than those in June.

Take international trips in August. For foreign getaways, late summer flights can be nearly 20% less expensive than those during the holiday season in December.
