GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - GI Public Library has been closed for the last two months due to the Coronavirus but today, May 27, 2020, begins phase one of their re-opening with a book drop off service. People still aren't allowed inside of the building, but now they can drive-up and drop off those checked out books they've had for months.
People can drop off their books every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the north-side of the building. This service only happens once a week, so books can be properly sanitized. Once dropped off, the books are wiped down, kept in a separate room for 3 days until possibly infected surfaces.
Steve Fosselman, Director of GI Public Library, "The library doesn't want people to sanitize the books themselves. "Don't do your own sanitizing. Don't wipe down the plastic cover before you return it because there's really no need for you to do that. Its going to be in quarantine, don't worry about it"
"The drop box will be locked at 6 p.m. or earlier if its full, The library asks residents to come back another time if it is and don't leave them outside."
"Don't leave it outside because you're responsible for that book even though we don't have overdue fines, said Fosselman. "You may have that book come back in bad condition because the rain or anything like that. So you might be responsible for replacing that book."
The library isn't accepting donations at this time. "It may be quite a while before we can accept donations so please don't put donations into the book drop," said Fosselman.
Next Wednesday, June 1, 2020, The library will start a new curbside pick-up service. People can hold books online and pick them up through the drive-thru. The library will also start a virtual summer reading program next week on their Facebook page.
It is unclear when the library can open their doors to the public. Right now, they've only scheduled to do the drop off and curbside pick-up until mid-June. After that, they will communicate with city officials on when they can begin phase two.
