Beyond the Book

Have you ever wondered how the Librarians discover new authors to read? Would you enjoy learning more about an author’s writing process or listening to an author describe the “why and how” of their newest book? Although the Librarians cull specialized publishing journals to read reviews of forthcoming books for collection development, they also subscribe to several newsletters which offer book resources that go “beyond the book”. First Look Book Club through Penguin Random House offers a free email book club which sends daily excerpts Monday through Friday from just published books. A new book debuts each week. Lawrence Wright’s new novel The End of October , one of the Librarians’ recommended books, was featured the week of May 11th. Go to penguinrandomhouselibrary.com/first-look-book-club/ to subscribe. There are also contests to enter to win a free print copy of a new book.

Another online newsletter to subscribe to is Reading Group Choices. New books are featured each week. The Paris Hours by Alex George, one of the Librarians’ recommended titles, is currently being featured.  There are links to excerpts, discussion questions and book giveaways. Older titles are also featured on the website. Sign up at readinggroupchoices.com/. Additional “beyond the book ” resources will continue to be offered on the Garden City Public Library Facebook page and in this Speaking of Books weekly column.

All books recommended in this article are available as eBooks. You can request new and forthcoming eBooks and audiobooks through Overdrive.com on our website www.gardencitypl.org and the Libby app. You can also request  print copies of new and popular reads through the Library’s catalog on the website. Remember requests will not be fulfilled until operations resume. Consider using the Library’s digital services during the closure. Need a library card?
