Beyond the Book
Have you ever wondered how the Librarians discover new authors to read? Would you enjoy learning more about an author’s writing process or listening to an author describe the “why and how” of their newest book? Although the Librarians cull specialized publishing journals to read reviews of forthcoming books for collection development, they also subscribe to several newsletters which offer book resources that go “beyond the book”. First Look Book Club through Penguin Random House offers a free email book club which sends daily excerpts Monday through Friday from just published books. A new book debuts each week. Lawrence Wright’s new novel The End of October , one of the Librarians’ recommended books, was featured the week of May 11th. Go to penguinrandomhouselibrary.com/first-look-book-club/ to subscribe. There are also contests to enter to win a free print copy of a new book.
Another online newsletter to subscribe to is Reading Group Choices. New books are featured each week. The Paris Hours by Alex George, one of the Librarians’ recommended titles, is currently being featured. There are links to excerpts, discussion questions and book giveaways.
