Wolkoff becomes increasingly resentful, and a little concerned, that her title, White House clearance status and even her salary never seem to be confirmed by a written contract. Finally, as questions begin to mount about the money spent on the inauguration, things come to a head, and Wolkoff writes Melania a long, late-night email, in which she says she “willingly opened my heart, sacrificed my relationships, my companies” to the first lady but that she faced “intense hostility everywhere” and that “they have completely stripped me of my dignity." She ends by writing “You are my best friend, and this isn't what I ever wanted. I am so dedicated to you, always and forever.”
Melania never responds.
The next day, The New York Times publishes an articles that states that, at a cost of $107 million, the Trump inauguration was that most expensive in history, and that Wolkoff's firm got $26 million of that money – a story Wolkoff is convinced was planted by her growing enemies in the White House. (Wolkoff rebuffs the Times story at length, writing that she was paid just $480,000 – “a fee of less than one half of one-percent.")
At this point, Wolkoff's anger begins to build, particularly over Melania's silence and her apparent refusal to defend her. “It was the worst mistake of my life to get involved with Melania and the Trumps, emotionally, mentally, physically, financially, socially, professionally,” she writes. “It suddenly became painfully clear to me that she wasn't really my friend.”
And this is where the book takes a curious turn. The friendship is over, right? Wolkoff certainly writes as much. But the two stay in touch, sharing phone calls and chummy texts with lots of emojis. “Why?” you might ask. Well, the cynical reader will clearly come to the conclusion that Wolkoff knew she had a book in the experience and now wants to document as much of their interactions as possible. (As for the non-disclosure agreement that Wolkoff had signed, she writes that she is able to comment on things in the public record – such as the probe into the inauguration costs – and adds “what I've written about what happened between Melania and me during this time wasn't under an NDA")
