NASHVILLE — Author, fashion designer and entrepreneur Jayla Kelis Forsythe is bringing her words and wearables to the public through a new online store.

Jayla, who recently turned 9, celebrated the launch of JaylaKelis.com and the publication of her first book with an Aug. 22 party that included a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the projects. Jayla was born in Wilson and lives with her family in Nashville.

The self-published Christian children’s book, “It’s Not Nice To Be a Bully,” debuted Aug. 7 on Amazon.com. It’s 46 pages long and tells the story of Jess, a girl who endures relentless teasing at school.

“I love to encourage people,” Jayla said in a news release. “That’s why I wrote a book to let kids know that bullying other kids is not OK. It is very wrong and can hurt people’s feelings. I want to encourage kids to know that it’s OK to be the unique you that God has made you to be.”

The book sells for $12.60 and is available on JaylaKelis.com, Amazon.com and the Books-A-Million and Barnes & Noble websites.

Jayla’s online store features a shirt that reinforces the book’s anti-bullying message along with custom clothing and accessories from her “Be You” catalog. Offerings include T-shirts and matching tote bags bearing the messages “Girl Power,” “Sweet Dreams,” “Smile” and the pandemic-inspired “Mask On.”

“I started my own business in Nash County when I was 8 years old, loving what I do with a passion of making my own designs, handmade items and sewing (whether) it’s clothes, accessories or shoes,” Jayla writes on her website.

Like many fashion designers, the young entrepreneur shares her name with the clothing brand she created. Jayla Kelis LLC was incorporated in August 2019 with Jayla and mother Laytonia Denece Forsythe-Hill listed as managers in the company’s N.C. Department of the Secretary of State filings.

Jayla said she enjoys reading, writing, drawing, singing and dancing.

“As I continue to grow, I’m looking forward to making more of my dreams come true,” she writes on JaylaKelis.com. “I have a lot that I would love to do to help and encourage children.”
