Hernán Moreno-Hinojosa, the “Folklorist of the South Texas Brush Country,” is at it again. This time he has penned a thrilling book with a compilation of scary tales that stem from friends, relatives and neighbors and sundry acquaintances in his hometown of Hebbronville, Texas, and surrounding area.
Hebbronville is located in Jim Hogg Country 55 miles east of Laredo, 100 miles west of Corpus Christi and 60 to 150 miles north of the state’s southern border with Mexico in the Rio Grande Valley. It is in the heart of the Brush Country.
For good measure Moreno-Hinojosa tosses in a few “true tales” of his experience as a Houston police officer.
His new book is “Lechuza: Eerie and Unusual Tales,” and it does not disappoint. It contributes and enhances Moreno-Hinojosa’s reputation as a superb story-teller and joins his classic tales of “Candelaria’s Sorrow", “Ghostly Rider” and “The Girl Who Danced with the Devil” as a testament to South Texas story-telling and legend.
In “Lechuza” he reveals tales that continue to be told at campfires and gatherings around South Texas. Some date back to the 19th century, others are now being told by the children of the original story-tellers. All will keep you in suspense and give you a sense of wonderment about the world we live in.
Central to this book is the legend of the “Lechuza.” Technically, it is a large owl, a barn owl, perhaps. But people in South Texas and northern Mexico have always felt it was a witch and an evil omen. “Brujos” and “Brujas” — warlocks and witches — transformed themselves into these creatures and at night would bring havoc to the population. Is it true or just another tall tale of the Brush Country? The way Moreno-Hinojosa tells it, it is more than real.
