I have spent my lifetime in service to my country. First as a United States marine. Following my honorable discharge from the Marine Corps I signed on as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. I delivered Social Security checks, paychecks, invoices, bills, birthday cards, food,
tools, and medicine to families on my route every day. I was also elected to serve as the national business agent for the National Association of Letter Carriers and learned a lot about the inner workings of post offices across the country.
I retired from USPS in 2008, and I’m still involved in this historic American institution because of my deep appreciation for the work the USPS does and the life it affords veterans and working families like mine. Over the years, people have threatened to subcontract the mail service to UPS or Federal Express. The truth of the matter is this: There is not a company that can compete with the U.S. Postal Service. Private companies turn to the USPS to complete deliveries when obstacles appear too great. We are a national public service created by Ben Franklin himself to serve our collective commerce. The USPS always delivers.
The USPS employs over 500,000 people, and many of them are veterans and people of color. It
is voted the most trusted federal agency year after year by the American people. The USPS
provides its employees with liveable wages, healthcare and many other benefits essential to
every family trying to earn their piece of the American Dream. The USPS provides a service to customers that is unmatched. Our veterans get their medications through the mail. Our seniors receive their Social Security through the mail. Small businesses and family farms in every corner of the U.S. rely on the USPS to deliver the parts and pieces necessary for their success.
Now Donald Trump has set out to destroy the USPS for his own political power by appointing one of his unqualified “yes men.” He discredits employees, fires hardworking people, and removes essential equipment. The American people won’t will allow this to happen. The people who I have worked with and represented have great pride in the work they do. The American people depend on the USPS.
Congress is returning to Washington this week to save this great service organization, and I am
proud of the support that my representative, Joe Neguse, has shown this vital institution. Please contact your congressional representative and ask them to do the same. And thank your letter carrier for walking in good faith and service. Respect their commitment to the American people and to the United States Postal Service motto: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”
