ALBANY - New York has the most deaths in the nation from COVID-19, but now has among the lowest infection rates in the nation.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is writing about it.
Crown, an imprint of the Random House Publishing Group, announced Tuesday it will publish a new book Oct. 13 by the Democratic governor, titled AMERICAN CRISIS: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic.
“If you don’t feel fear, you don’t appreciate the consequences of the circumstance," Cuomo writes in a passage released by Random House.
"The questions are what do you do with the fear and would you succumb to it. I would not allow the fear to control me. The fear kept my adrenaline high and that was a positive. But I would not let the fear be a negative, and I would not spread it. Fear is a virus also.”
The book will be the second since Cuomo took office. His memoir, All Things Possible: Setbacks and Success in Politics and Life, was a flop selling a mere 3,000 copies when it was published before his re-election in 2014. He was paid about $700,000 for it.
Cuomo spoke about the state's coronavirus response during a prime-time address Monday at the Democratic National Convention, highlighting New York's ability to bend the COVID curve and criticizing the federal response.
Random House billed Cuomo's book as a "revealing, behind-the-scenes account of his experience leading New York State through the COVID-19 epidemic."
The book will be released in physical and e-book formats, with an audio book edition read by Cuomo, the publisher announced. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
New York has had more then 25,000 deaths due to coronavirus, by far the most in America.
But a careful reopening of businesses and requiring masks to be worn has helped New York lower its death toll from as many as 800 a day in early April to just a few a day now.
And the state just had 10 days in a row of infection rates below 1% as it tests more than 50,000 people a day.
Cuomo continues to face criticism over the overall death toll and the more than 6,500 people who died in nursing homes, with opponents saying he should have shut down the state earlier in March and did more to protect the vulnerable in nursing homes.
"Democrats are celebrating Governor Andrew Cuomo as a model of leadership, but he’s no hero," President Donald Trump's campaign said after the governor's address Monday night.
"Not only do nearly 270 people flee New York City every day, but his terrible response to the coronavirus was the worst in the country by far."
In a news release, Random House said Cuomo filled a national leadership void as the virus spread, first hitting New York the hardest.
The book includes "a clear game plan" on how the nation needs to continue to protect itself from the virus, the publisher said.
"In his own voice, Andrew Cuomo chronicles in American Crisis the ingenuity and sacrifice required of so many to fight the pandemic, sharing his personal reflections on 40 years in government and the decision-making that shaped his political policy," Random House said.
