As The Page Turns with Librarian Laura Flanagan — new biography and new fiction
The Mystery of Charles Dickens by A. N. Wilson (released on August 4, 2020) Charles Dickens was a superb public performer, a great orator and one of the most famous of the Eminent Victorians. Slight of build, with a frenzied, hyper-energetic personality, Dickens looked much older than his 58 years when he died. Experiencing the worst and best of life during the Victorian Age, Dickens was not merely the conduit through whom some of the most beloved characters in literature came into the world. He was one of them. The Mystery of Charles Dickens looks back from the legendary writer’s death to recall the key events in his life. In doing so, award-winning biographer A. N. Wilson seeks to understand Dickens’ creative genius and enduring popularity. Wilson writes with precision, intuition, and enormous compassion for Dickens’ sense of social justice and outrage, especially regarding children in the mercilessly materialist Victorian era.
The Switch: A Novel by Beth O’Leary (released on August 18, 2020) When overachiever Leena Cotton is ordered to take a two-month sabbatical after blowing a big presentation at work, she escapes to her grandmother Eileen’s house for some long-overdue rest. Eileen is newly single and about to turn eighty. She’d like a second chance at love, but her tiny Yorkshire village doesn’t offer many eligible gentlemen. So they decide to try a two-month swap. Eileen will live in London and look for love. She’ll take Leena’s flat, and learn all about casual dating, swiping right, and city neighbors. Meanwhile Leena will look after everything in rural Yorkshire: Eileen’s sweet cottage and garden, her idyllic, quiet village, and her little
neighborhood projects. But stepping into one another’s shoes proves more difficult than either of them expected. Will swapping lives help Eileen and Leena find themselves …. and maybe even find true love? In Beth O’Leary’s The Switch, it’s never too late to change everything….or to find yourself.
Up For Grabs by Librarian Martin Bowe — new biography and true crime nonfiction
Butch Cassidy: The True Story of an American Outlaw by Charles Leerhsen (released July 14th, 2020) Robert Leroy Parker and Harry Longabaugh were the subjects of the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Subsequently, the outlaw duo became a source of fascination for the two actors and the movie audience who sought out additional details about them. Leerhsen relates the story of an affable Mormon farm boy who adapted his criminal skills from rustling to bank robberies and train heists. His exploits brought the attention of the Pinkerton Detective Agency–a precursor to the FBI–who hounded him until his final fate in Bolivia. Leerhsen has collated all the facts and all the rumors into a readable narrative.
Hunting Whitey: The Inside Story of the Capture and Killing of America’s Most Wanted Crime Boss by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge (released on May 26,2020) This is the most complete account of James “Whitey” Blulger from his 16 years on the lam through his trial and brutal murder in prison. The FBI, despite rumors, did not soft pedal in their pursuit of the Boston gang leader who had become America’s most wanted criminal. The related accounts include a possible sighting of Bulger watching his fictional depiction in Martin Scorsese’s film The Departed. A tipster brought about his capture in Santa Monica, California. I have often strolled the Santa Monica Promenade and I wonder if I may have passed a relaxing Whitey Bulger there.
Bookmarked by Librarian Ann Garnett — new thriller and new essay collection
The Silent Wife by Karin Slaughter (released on August 4, 2020) The New York Times best selling author returns with her tenth crime thriller about detective Will Trent. This time Trent is investigating the killing of a prisoner during a riot inside a state penitentiary. One of the inmates claims that he is innocent of a brutal attack for which he has always been the prime suspect. The man insists that he was framed by a corrupt law enforcement team and that the real culprit is still out there—a serial killer who has systematically been preying on women across the state for years. Only days ago, another young woman was viciously murdered in a state park in northern Georgia. Is it a coincidence, or could there be a serial killer on the loose? As Will digs into both crimes, it becomes clear that he must solve the original case in order to reach the truth. Nearly a decade has passed — enough time for memories to fade, witnesses to vanish, and evidence to disappear. When the past and present collide, everything Will values is at stake.
Vesper Flights by Helen Macdonald (to be released on August 25, 2020) The author of the nonfiction bestseller H is for Hawk returns with Vesper Flights a collection of her best loved essays, along with new pieces on topics ranging from nostalgia for a vanishing countryside to the tribulations of farming ostriches to her own private vespers while trying to fall asleep. Meditating on the notions of captivity and freedom, immigration and flight, Macdonald, who is one of this century’s most important and insightful nature writers, invites the reader into her own most intimate experiences: observing the massive migration of songbirds from the top of the Empire State Building, watching tens of thousands of cranes in Hungary, seeking the last golden orioles in Suffolk’s poplar forests. She writes with emotion and clarity about wild boar, swifts, mushroom hunting, the strangeness of birds’ nests, and the unexpected guidance and comfort we find when watching wildlife.
